  • Responsibilities

    General Responsibilities:

    • Attend staff training as well as weekly staff meetings.
    • Care for 10-15 campers as a counselor in a cabin along with 2-3 co-counselors. This includes morning wakeup, cabin cleanup, rest hour, and bedtime in the cabin.

    • Help foster an inclusive environment that celebrates our different identities, experiences, and backgrounds.
    • Pitch in on activity set up, evening programs, and other special events.
    • This is a round-the-clock job for 10 weeks. Because you are in a cabin with the campers, you are the one who will wake up in the middle of the night if they need something. Campers don’t know what time off is for caregivers (until you are on time off and out of camp or in the staff lounge).
    • This job requires stamina and perseverance; both physically and emotionally.

    Specific Responsibilities:

    Interaction with Children

    • Get to know campers and respond to each of them as an individual.
    • Work to assure a quality camp experience for every camper.
    • Develop an appropriate counselor/camper relationship with every camper.
    • Act as a role model for children by abiding by the rules in camp and that you set as a cabin.
    • Encourage, support and set limits for children.
    • Be aware and effectively address the group and social dynamics of campers.

    Basic Care

    • Be safety conscious at all times.
    • Make sure that every camper's basic needs are met.
    • Be aware of the campers’ physical and emotional health.
    • Maintain general cabin cleanliness (set forth by our cabin clean-up roles and score sheet).
    • Teach children to develop good self-care and independent living skills.

    Program

    • Help facilitate quality daily activities throughout each session.
    • With co-counselors, create and facilitate age appropriate cabin activities.
    • Enthusiastically participate in all camp programs including activities, special events and color wars.

    Administrative Duties

    • Complete all required paperwork (e.g. parent letters, weekly self and cabin evaluations) on time.
    • Abide by the time off/cabin on-duty schedule.
    • Help ensure each camper writes home on a regular basis.

    Staff Professionalism

    • Embody camp values; doing the right things for the right reasons.
    • Prepare for, accept, and deliver feedback and constructively problem solve during supervisory conversations and co-counseling meetings.
    • Set a good example for campers and others including: cleanliness/hygiene, punctuality, sharing clean-up and chores, being a good teammate.
    • Follow camp policy related to smoking, use of alcoholic beverages and drugs (re: they are prohibited at camp, and drinking is only allowed on time off and when 21+).
    • Encourage respect for personal property, camp equipment and facilities.
    • Maintain a proactive, confident and positive attitude.
    • Ask for help from appropriate staff when needed

This Role Might Be For You If:

You are looking to make an impact this summer: Maybe you are thinking about going into a career in teaching, social work, childcare, or maybe you are looking to develop yours and others’ leadership skills. If you want to help shape the lives and friendships of campers ages 7-15 and your co-counselors and fellow camp staff members, Marimeta is the place to be. We want you to help create a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere, where everyone feels valued, contributing to our Marimeta community, which often feels more like a family.

You have a desire to work in an outdoor, remote, rustic setting. The natural surroundings of our 15 acres in Northwoods of Wisconsin on the beautiful shores of Lake Meta is one of the most beautiful places to work. It helps us foster an authentic connection with both campers and fellow staff members. Wifi is limited to specific areas and phone use is not allowed while interacting with campers. Your willingness to disconnect from technology during interactions with campers reflects your dedication to creating genuine, face-to-face connections that encourage campers to engage with their surroundings and each other.

You can problem-solve: we are looking for someone with a “let me try to fix this first” mindset. As a cabin counselor, your problem-solving skills are crucial for addressing the various challenges that can arise in a camp environment. Your proactive and solution-oriented approach will reassure campers and fellow staff that you're always ready to tackle obstacles head-on, which will build trust. We don’t expect you to know everything, nor to be able to fix everything! We’re just looking for someone willing to try.

You are able and willing to assist in teaching an activity: We offer lots of activities at camp; from waterskiing to our high ropes course, tennis to cooking, arts and crafts to soccer and many others. We also offer certifications in many of these areas. A large part of your day will be in activities and it’s also a large part of what makes camp fun! Your willingness to step in and help teach activities demonstrates your dedication to Marimeta’s holistic program, enhancing campers' skill development and enjoyment.

You possess good character, integrity, adaptability, enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience, self-control, and responsibility: This admittedly comprehensive list of attributes encompasses the qualities we intend to teach campers and work on ourselves. Your good character and integrity set a positive example for campers, promoting ethical behavior and mutual respect. Adaptability, enthusiasm, and a sense of humor contribute to a lively and engaging atmosphere. Patience and self-control help you navigate challenges gracefully, while your sense of responsibility ensures the well-being and growth of campers.

You can accept supervision and guidance: None of us are perfect, and we are looking for team members who are willing to receive guidance and learn - and we hope to learn from you too! Your ability to learn from others and follow instructions ensures a cohesive and safe camp operation, and allows all of us to grow.

You’re up to the physical demands of camp and its activities: You’ll get the best sleep of your life after an active day. From accompanying kids to their activities, and even participating ourselves, we get it- this job is demanding! We don’t need you to tell us how much you can bench or the pace of a mile you can run, but we want to be clear that the days at camp are jam-packed with activities.

You are present and involved: Your vigilance and attention to camper behavior demonstrate your commitment to their safety and well-being. Your ability to recognize potential hazards and respond to camper needs, whether medical or emotional, ensures a secure and nurturing environment. Your watchful eye contributes to the overall safety and enjoyment of all campers. Your ability to manage behavior effectively while upholding safety protocols and emergency procedures creates an environment where campers can learn, have fun, and feel secure in this special place.
